Come out of your soul like a rocket.

Autre Ne Veut

Autre Ne Veut’s voice is a space shuttle.  You’ve seen footage of launches.  There’s the quiet anticipation, T-minus 10, 9, 8, the low, muted rumbling of the engines, 7, 6, 5, a roar enveloped in volcanic flames, 4, 3, 2, the automaton begins to move, up, up, 2, 1, the earth shakes to say goodbye.

That’s what I mean.

Have you ever felt something, something like an emotion, bursting out of you?  I bet you have, and if you haven’t I hope you will.  It could be as simple as the joy of saying hi to a baby, as heavy as the pride of receiving your diploma, as transcendent as the ecstasy of the moment you get down on one knee.  However it’s happened, if you’ve felt happiness and excitement coursing through your body from head to toe, well, I think that’s called being alive.  To have that feeling for a moment makes every other moment worth it.  We chase that feeling, following maps we draw in our heads with signposts made of hopes and dreams.  We chase that feeling with liquids and pills.  We chase that feeling until we hold its warmth between our arms, its weight against our chests.

Bukowski:

“unless it comes out of
your soul like a rocket,
unless being still would
drive you to madness or
suicide or murder,
don’t do it.
unless the sun inside you is
burning your gut,
don’t do it.

when it is truly time,
and if you have been chosen,
it will do it by
itself and it will keep on doing it
until you die or it dies in you.

there is no other way.

and there never was.”
